Did you know that September is Healthy Aging Month? It’s the cornerstone of the “Healthy Aging Campaign,” whose purpose is to focus national attention on the positive aspects of aging. At Senior1Care, we think a good motto for Healthy Aging Month would be, “Act how you feel – not your age,” and we believe this special month for aging adults should be celebrated. Here are some great ways to kick up your heels to celebrate yourself and Healthy Aging Month!

Connect with someone special and do something special

As we get older, we tend to cocoon ourselves a bit and can begin feeling isolated and, at times, lonely. This month, contact a friend or family you’d like to spend some special time with and enjoy their company for a few hours. Some things you can invite them to do are:

  • Prepare lunch or dinner together at your home and enjoy a scrumptious meal. Maybe even break out the fine china!
  • Take a walk in a park together or even a stroll around the block if mobility is challenging for you.
  • Go out and enjoy a special event. See a movie, concert, or play and enjoy an afternoon or evening together.

Spending time with a special loved one or friend doesn’t have to mean spending a lot of money; many things you can don’t cost anything. Fresh air is free!

Sleep in

If you’re like most Americans, you aren’t getting enough sleep. Aging adults need at least seven hours of solid sleep a night. Treat yourself and sleep in one morning during Healthy Aging Month. Ask a family member to make breakfast or brunch for you that morning. Pamper yourself – you deserve it.

Visit a local attraction

Most of us spend more time seeing the sights in other cities than we do in our own backyard. What places in your hometown have you always wanted to visit but haven’t made the time? Check out a local museum you’ve driven by many times, go take pictures of a historical landmark in your city, or just spend time in a park you’ve never been to.

Try something new

Is there something you’ve wanted to try but have been holding back on doing? Do something new for yourself and even do it with a friend. Take a cooking or dancing class, start a new hobby like playing an instrument, begin painting or writing, or even begin learning a new language. Embrace your creativity!

Volunteer

A nice way to celebrate Healthy Aging Month is to share some of your time and talents volunteering and helping people in your community. Spend a few hours visiting people confined to a hospital bed or helping sort food at a local food bank. There are many organizations out there that would love to meet you and have you lend a hand.
