Do you wake up every morning dreading another day of drudgery at your job? Are you between careers right now and searching for something fulfilling? However, take a look at these five questions to figure out if you have a self-fulfilling job and if the answer is no, why not consider a career as a caregiver?

What do I like about work?

One of the most effective ways to answer this question is to look back in time to other positions you’ve had and write down on paper which roles you enjoyed and which ones weren’t at all fulfilling for you. Once you identify those roles you feel positive about, ask yourself:

  • What kind of work was I doing?
  • Did it help me feel that I was contributing to my employer and/or my customer?
  • What was the pace of the work?
  • How much supervision did I need to do my work?

Sometimes looking at the past can help us see the future more clearly.

What am I good at?

Take a look at your skillset and honestly evaluate and identify the things you do best. Maybe it’s helping other people, managing your time efficiently, or being a team player. If you’re considering a career change, interviewers will be asking you this question, so it’s best to be prepared in advance for it.

What do I want to learn?

Careers often get stale because the work is no longer interesting. It’s become mundane, and you aren’t learning anything new. If training and development are important to you, write out questions to ask potential employers about their training program and how they help their employees develop their careers. You want to work for an organization that recognizes its people are its most valuable asset and invests in its staff.

What kind of culture do I thrive in?

The environment and atmosphere of the place you work can make or break your satisfaction with your career. You may enjoy the work but find the environment to be toxic. What was your favorite place to work? What was the culture there? As you evaluate opportunities, be sure to not only ask management about the culture, but talk with several people that will be doing the work you’ll be doing, or something similar, about what they like or don’t like about the work environment.

What impact do I want to have?

Think about how you want to impact the people that you interact with every day. How important is it to be valued and make a difference in people’s lives? When we devote a large portion of our day to our careers, many people don’t just want a paycheck; they want to know that their work matters. How important to you is that at this point in your career?
